Flight Controls & Guidance

Flight Controls & GuidanceHoneywell continues the tradition of industry leading flight controls and guidance systems with the latest entries of the Primus Epic® integrated avionics system and the first fly-by-wire system in the business and regional segment.

Honeywell flight control systems offer advanced architectures and capabilities, including fail passive and fail operational (automatic switchover) operation, CAT II approach, windshear guidance and integrated thrust management.

The Primus® 1000 and Primus 2000 systems represent the first steps in integrated avionics, combining the latest Honeywell flight control functions and architectures with displays, flight management and fault warning in an integrated computer.

The Honeywell fly-by-wire represents the next wave of advancement in business and regional jets. Now certified on the Embraer 170, the fly-by-wire system provides reduced weight and installation costs, improved dispatch through integrated maintenance and the ability to dynamically augment aircraft performance.

Primus® 1000
The IC-600/IC-615 integrated avionics computer (IAC), is the heart of the Primus® 1000 avionics system. It combines the functions of an advanced fail-passive autopilot, flight director and display processor into one highly reliable lightweight package.

Integration of these functions enhances the built-in-test and fault isolation capabilities for improved maintenance. This advanced autopilot features a three-axis, truly fail-passive architecture far superior to torque-limited designs. This results in greater passenger comfort and enhanced safety in all flight conditions. And, with reliability as one of the key elements of the Primus 1000 system design, we reduced the number of boxes and wires and featured intensive self-test and flight fault monitoring.

Primus® 2000
The Honeywell developed and patented, Primus® 2000 automatic dual flight control system features a fully integrated fail operational (automatic switching) design. The flight control system integrates the flight director, autopilot and auto throttle with multiple sensor redundancy management in the IC-800 integrated avionics computer (IAC).

Through this technique, sensor data from both sides of the aircraft is available to both IACs to provide monitoring as well as continuous operation, should the sensor fail, all without pilot interaction.

The Primus 2000 provides full three-axis, truly fail-passive operation. Available features include coupled go-around and flight path modes, CAT II landing capability, and windshear guidance.

Fly by Wire
Honeywell is the first avionics manufacturer to certify a fly-by-wire system on a regional jet. Our fly-by-wire system represents the next wave of advancement in business and regional jets. Now certified on the Embraer 170, the fly-by-wire system provides reduced weight and installation costs, improved dispatch through integrated maintenance and the ability to dynamically improve aircraft performance.

The fly-by-wire system consists of two key components:
Actuator control electronics (ACE) provides the basic control column/pedals to flight control surface actuators control and monitoring.
Flight control module integrated (FCM) within the Primus Epic® modular avionics unit provides digital augmentation commands to the ACE to provide aircraft performance augmentation.
